Maybe I'm an idealist on this point, but I can see similar benefit from 
leased batteries, even if they're not swappable.  

If - and this is the key! - you as the EV owner are paying for the use of a 
battery that provides X km or miles of range, or even paying by the mile, 
then the chemistry and design that yield that result are essentially 
irrelevant to you.

But they're not irrelevant to the lessor!  It's in their best interest to 
use the technology that provides the lowest cost per unit of range.  
Charging efficiency makes a difference too; the less energy they use to 
charge the battery they rent to you, the more money they make on your use of 
it.  

They have a powerful incentive to push the technology forward.  Also, as 
with swappable batteries, competitive advantage goes to the vendor with a 
low failure rate.  Of course this assumes that there IS competition.

It's very different from the model used in rechargeable consumer goods.  
There, since it's the user who bears the battery replacement cost, the 
manufacturer is often tempted to use a cheap battery and a dumb charger to 
get lower initial cost, at the expense of battery life.
