I suspect the EVSE will go the way of the Dodo eventually due to pricing pressure. The auto industry (GM) put the J1772 into law to make their expensive inductive charger competitive. Now it is hitting their profit margin and sales numbers.
We're already seeing the requirements being softened, it used to be that it had to be permanently mounted to the wall and wired in. Now we have cord-mounted level 2 EVSEs with UL approval. The cord-mounted EVSE is interesting since it doesn't protect the user from a shock when plugging in to the utility in pouring rain. The GFCI outlet protects the user so the main purpose of the EVSE is now redundant. The remaining functions can be moved vehicle side without compromising safety. Ground detect circuit - vehicle or coupler Pilot circuit - Coupler Contactors - Vehicle or coupler Proximity - already in coupler If the contactors and ground detect circuit moves into the vehicle then the cord can become a dumb one with just a resistor between two pins to indicate max power draw. It will take some time but we'll get there.
