That's what we're doing with the Sunrise EV2. Its battery pack is in a removable central "tray", and can be quickly swapped out. You can have an inexpensive short-range lead-acid tray, or an expensive lithium long-range tray, or even a hybrid tray with both batteries and a small generator. :-)
