I don't post much any more, but I do still read it. There certainly are
fewer of us hobbyists out there. As far back as 4 years I went to a
local "EV show" and had the only conversion. Many of the people who
brought their factory EVs were amazed that someone could convert a
vehicle to electric. So yes, I vote you continue it. And I really
appreciate the effort you put in.
I'm still driving the 1998 Ford Ranger I bought in 2011. It was
originally converted by a friend of mine in 2007 using a 9" DC motor and
144 volts of lead acid batteries. 1600 pounds of them. In 2011 he bought
a Nissan Leaf and decided to sell the truck. I had been noodling around
doing a conversion and decided to get a head start and buy it. I wanted
to go LiFePo4 and though it would be an easy conversion but in the end I
replaced everything except the motor, controller and vacuum pump. 436
pounds of CALB 100Ah cells got me the same 40 mile range but much better
performance.
By 2022 the range was down to 30 miles which just wasn't enough and I
was getting worried that the controller was showing signs of impending
death. The manufacturer was long gone and my options for DC motor
controllers had shrunk considerably so I decided to do another major
conversion. I installed a Netgain Hyper-9 HV and 48 CALB 230Ah cells. My
range is now slightly over 100 miles. I also took out the transmission
and replaced it with a TorqueTrends single speed gearbox. The driving
experience is much more like a factory EV now. The motor is a little
underpowered but overall I'm very happy with how the truck has come out.
And it's a lot of run to take to EV shows to show off what us old-timers
can accomplish.
