You mean the one that squelched Greek science (which had to be preserved by the Persians) and brought us the Dark Ages? Or do you refer the post-enlightenment civilization that burgeoned when the Roman Church lost it's grip.

... lost half of its grip. Aristotle theology is still taken for granted, and taboo, even by those claiming not to do religion. We are still in the dark ages in the human science and in the fundamental science.
