I wish it were a joke, just last month in a HBO documentary Pastor Peter LaRuffa educated the world with these words of wisdom:

"If somewhere within the Bible, I were to find a passage that said 2 + 2 = 5, I wouldn't question what I'm reading in the Bible. I would believe it, accept it as true, and then do my best to work it out and understand it."

You're just stuck on that literal reading, John. On a non-literal reading I'm sure it's true, e.g. for very large values of 2.
