Yes indeed. It also puts me in mind of Sherlock Holmes's famous dictum: "When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." Though it may not be quite what the eminent detective had in mind, it strikes me that many people are driven to espouse highly improbable positions purely in reaction to something they consider "impossible".
