Until just a couple of centuries ago the 2 things were virtually
synonymous, and even today it remains true for hundreds of millions of
people, especially in the Islamic world.

Religion is made possible by the separation of critical thinking from the
population, that's why critical thinking was illegal and punishable by
death in the past, and still is in many places.
