"Singularity" isn't quite the right word, because whatever happens will be limited by the laws of physics. Maybe nanotech actually is impossible. Maybe small scale fusion ditto. The assumption that we can increase everything without limit isn't likely to be correct. We have an idea of indefinite progress that can't work. The question is how high the peak is that we can reach. A sustainably run planet? A Dyson sphere? Neither appears remotely in reach yet, but of course no one knows what's around the corner. We could be speeding towards utopia, a brick wall, or "1984" - or 1084, for that matter.
