Sigh, everybody's so paranoid about government. Obama started using "extremism" because the chattering classes kept pointing out that terrorism is just a tactic and you can't make war on a tactic.

First a comment: it is not “chatter” that terrorism is a tactic; it happens to
be a fact!

It's also a fact that everyone understood that "war on terrorism" meant "pursuit of those who would commit terrorist acts". It a just nit-picking chatter by the Obama contrarians, who had not gripe when W used the phrase.

Calling it the “war on extremism”, opens the door to thought crime. With the
new definition

Com'on Chris, it's not a "definition", it's political rhetoric.

almost any un-desirable subject of interest can be so labeled. It is already being done, in fact.

And almost anything can be made illegal - if legislators vote for it. What's
your example?

This has a chilling free expression. What happens when someone gets into office with a homegrown Christian fundamentalist agenda.

Power needs to be circumscribed and limited as much as possible. Not because of good emperors but because of the more common bad ones!

That's like Einstein's dictum, "Everything needs to be made as simple as possible. But not simpler." It all turns on what is constraining "possible". Nothing constrains power except countervailing power.
