Absolutely. Google for Single Instance Storage and you will have your answer. When you perform individual mailbox backups, you are likely forcing the backup to create a copy of each message contained in each mailbox. If 1 message was sent to all 300 mailboxes (as an example), instead of only having one copy, and 300 pointers, you now have 300 copies in your backup. Newer versions may work better with this, but what are you really gaining by doing an individual mailbox backup?
