Hi, If it is only a few folders why can't you just copy them to a PST file or your mailbox before the app developer makes any changes. then if it is broken you just delete the folders from the live PF tree and copy the folders back from your copy and let normal PF replication propagate the items to all replicas.
If the live copy is already broken then the restore method doesn't have to be the complete DB. Build yourself a new forest which has a different Windows DNS name but the same Exchange Org and Site name. Do the restore to that forest and copy the required public folders back to live via a PST file. It might take longer but less chance of breaking the rest of the Public folders. The only issue I had doing this was making sure the backup system could connect to the restore forest. Either using identical username and password or attaching the tape drive to the restore server if its physical. You are right about the developer having a backup of the application. Looks like he is relying on the Exchange backups as his "code" is in the form in the inbox of the PF. I am not in the know here. To re-state the procedure I would have to use, using your outline from the prior message. I would dismount all three of the PF DB's, two in the 2010 environment, 1 in 2003. Remove all three from Exchange. Restore a backup to one 2010 mb server and mount it. Remount the second 2010 PF and the 2003 PF. re-add the replicas. Hope this would work.
