I have been using KOffice for a couple of weeks now, since installing MDK
7.2. I am running the 2.4.1 kernel. I have been surprised at the bugginess of
KOffice / KDE 2.0. I don't think this is due to the upgraded kernel, because
I was seeing similar behavoir under 2.2.17-21mdk which came on the MDK isos.
1. Very frequently, I have program crashes, more so that I would have
expected for "released software." This occurs in KWord, Konquerer (less
often), and KMail (almost every night when I first started using it, for some
reason now much less often).
2. KWord has many bugs. For instance, when I select a block of text and try
to replace it by typing, delete it with the DEL key, etc, it just plain
doesn't work.
3. Tonight I tried to configure my printer, having just gotten it back from
the repair shop where it has been since before I installed Linux on my new
computer. It is an HP Laserjet 5L connected to my LAN via a Linksys
printserver. Under windows it was a royal pain in the butt to get configured,
requiring installation of special software that came with it, and a lot of
head banging and scratching before I got it right. I figured with KUPS it
would be easier, but no such luck. Each and every time I went to the add
printer wizard in KUPS, it crashed going from the opening screen to the
"next" screen. Never got anywhere with it.
(As an aside, kudos still go to Linux. I ran DrakConf, clicked on the printer
manager, ignored the error when it couldn't find my cd drive for the install
files [my fault...it wanted /mnt/cdrom, but I took that out of fstab and
renamed it to /mnt/dvd to be more descriptive...anyway:] and added a new
printer. Configuring it as a remote printer, typing in the IP address of the
printserver and port "L1", and BAM...printing works fine. For those of you
thinking of a networked printer option, the Linksys prinserver which has a
built-in lpd server works just great).
Are others having similar problems? Would an upgrade to the beta of kde 2.1
fix this stuff, or is it just as bad? I desparately need some sort of office
suite at home, and REALLY need something that can read and write word 2K
files as well for compatibility with the office...unless word 2K runs under
wine...
