Nothing wrong with that. Take all the time you need to get to know your 
stable system in and out. Look out for the security update advices, 
either on MandrakeSecure.net or subscribe to the Mandrake Community 
Newsletter (see Website).

Probably not but a change in gcc may mean that you can't use 9.2 rpms to 
install them in 9.1, you'll have to compile them from tarball with your 
version of gcc. 

For me updating is common because I have to stay in sync with the 
distro's versions. but I would update anyway when

1. main lib changes
2. new kernel with a major number is officially integrated

Friend runs a 7.2 and is happy. He downloads the tarballs of security 
updates and compiles them for his system. He doesn't care for 
eye-candy, so a new KDE or GNOME is not important for him.
