Anne I'm willing to bet it's going to be a lot like the 2.2 to 2.4
switch.. A box that runs 2.4 can still run 2.2.  The only diff being
that if you need to run a feature that is 2.4 specific, you won't have
it if you boot into 2.2. 

As for the rate of change.  I agree.  Heck I just got rid of the last of
my 7.2 boxes.
