The engine reliability debate. I am still running the Rotax 494 that was the 1st to run in SCCA National Competition at Sebring Winter National in 1997. I ran the engine until I thought it needed freshening for the 2000 Runoff's, when I did a top end rebuild. Well some fool of a mechanic (me) did not get the piston pin circlips properly seated and they puked themselves up through the engine necessating a real rebuild (Thanks Mike Moench for the loaner to complete the Runoffs, thanks Mike Q for the rebuild). That rebuild carried me through the 2003 SEDIV Double National where I burnt down a piston account a cracked carb boot. Jim Elder and Dolphin Racing performed that rebuild (the idiot mechanic having learned his lesson) and the engine is still pulling strong today.
The 2006 Runoff's will mark the end of the 10th competitive year for this engine. For a 3" tall b&w classified ad: SportsCar $120, Grassroots Motorsports $114, FormulaCar $75. Those prices are per month based on a 12 month (SC, GRM) or 6 month (FCM) commitment. I used the per inch price times 3 because I thought that was the minimum size we would want to consider. So, you can calculate the cost of a larger ad. Lots of interesting ideas in the postings. After looking at the Grassroots Motosports media kit, I agree that it looks focused on the import/tin top/NASA/IT crowd. They list the feature articles for all the 2006 issues, and I didn't see anything but tin top cars and performace mods for tin tops. For those of you into karting, what are the best mags for us to pursue? Are there any that are focused on the 100cc or 4 cycle karts (non-shift)? The engine blow up debate is interesting. My take - it's all relative. I've never had an engine blow up on a street car in 23 years of driving. My first Rotax burned up 3 times in 1997 and I haven't burned one up since in approx 40 races. Does that mean my F500 engine blows up a lot? Keep the ideas coming! --------------------------------- Yahoo!
