Your last sentence is another reason why one
puts up with a less-than-happy lifestyle (such
as MD, for those for whom it does not seem to
be a good "fit") for longer than would seem
sensible. It beats working.

Or does it?

I don't know about you guys, but I have a deep
respect for those rare spiritual traditions in
which the priests or hierarchy *worked* for a
living. The "flock" didn't support them. They had
to go out and work for a living in the world, as
did the flock.

Most of those traditions have developed a feeling
of work *as* path, just another experience that one
can attempt to bring one's best to, and thus use
work as just another opportunity to learn and grow.
There is almost never the concept of a "day job"
in such traditions. There is only the job, and
it's called life. :-)
