Michelle,
In my limited experience, if the Mother is positive then odds are all the
kittens are positive.  I'd start testing with the Mom.  If Mom is negative then
there is a chance the Dad could have some impact.  You could then start testing
the kittens but I would think you'd need to check each kitten if Mom is
negative.

I'm dealing with 2 litters of FeLV+ feral cats.  There were 5 kittens in the
older group.  I rescued 2 and they both tested positive.  One vanished.  Daisy
had a litter before I could trap her.  I did TNR on her and rescued her litter
of four week old kittens.  All 4 kittens have tested positive.

I am still trying to trap Mae to do TNR.  I know some feel TNR should not be
done on positive cats.  I can not PTS a cat who is currently healthy.  I have
rescued another cat from the same colony with different parents who tested
negative which re-enforces my belief that FeLV is not as easily transmitted
between cats as some vets would lead us to believe.   My goal is to spay/neuter
all the cats in the colony to stop the spread of this disease.

In the meantime the latest 4 babies are doing fine in a cat enclosure at my
house.  They have now gotten all their shots, been spayed/neutered and I am
looking for forever homes for them.  I'm not real optimistic since that was my
goal with Sissy and Rocket.

Sorry for the log story.  Start with testing Mom.

Subject: [Felvtalk] Testing New Kittens - Need Help

I have four 7 week old kittens and their mother that came from the pound that I
need to test for FELV/FIV and my vet said that I would only need to test the
mother and one kitten and not test all kittens.

Do you think that will be reliable? It's $30 per snap test, so I think
they're wanting to save me money, which I appreciate, just not sure if some
of the kittens could contract a disease and others wouldn't.

Any input would be GREATLY appreciated. Michelle Brockman
