I just booked a flight yesterday. In addition to scissors and knitting needles, I have a friend who had her fingernail clippers and eyelash curlers confiscated. AS a habitual airport knitter, I am a bit flustered. I hoping a drop spindle will be OK. As for cutting yarn without an implement, you can always use your teeth (don't tell my dentist), or you can untwist the yarn and pull to break it. I realize this is not ideal for needlepoint.
