It's interesting how some people enjoy basic colors all the same and others
love rainbow hues. It just depends on personality, I think. I enjoy
rainbow and tones/hues of one color both, so maybe hearing what they have
to say, before you make the shawls, you ask the people you are making them
for. You don't have to tell them why you're asking them though...and it
will still be a surprise at Christmas.
I always keep little notes in a notebook about what people mention to me in
terms of likes/dislikes in colors and patterns, so I don't have to guess
when I make them something for their birthday or holidays.

If you buy a color wheel at an art store or make one yourself (you can even
weave one), you can figure out what you want. There are your primary
colors, your secondary colors, and your tertiary colors, and then hues and
tones by adding neutrals (blacks, whites, grays). Then the contrasting
colors...it's just like making an acrylic, oil or watercolor
painting...it's the same color theory in the end...
