I hate to spoil the fun, but the english language beats out all the funny extra characters we can possibly come up with.
The thing of it is, it doesn't matter whether your email program and keyboard or alt commands can make the character if the person reading you can't see it, or sees it differently then you intended. Everyone uses different email programs and different operating systems, so what works for the sender won't necessarily work for the reader. If you want to communicate accurately, try typing the word 'degrees' instead of using the symbol.
