Holly -- might I suggest a warp of 8/2 cotton threaded
in straight draw (possibly with a point at each side).  This allows for a lot
of "playing in the tie-up" where you have a 16x16 grid to design various
twills.  If you want, you can go with a finer yarn, but 8/2 is fine enough for
towels and gives almost instant gratification.  <g>
