David, I'm the guy who mentioned Sibelius in this discussion. Since I have not yet ordered Finale 2007, my comments are only from a Sibelius perspective.

To split a double part in Sibelius I would probably extract the part and then split it manually (there are plugins and filters to simplify that job). However, I have avoided extracting parts for the last year and would prefer another method.

If I was determined not to extract a part I might approach the score differently. Sibelius dynamic parts allow the user to combine any number of parts into partial scores. I could have separate (was it oboe?) staves on my working score. After the work was completed I could implode (to use the Finale term) the two oboe staves into a new stave, then combine that stave with all of the others needed (in the dynamic part function) to create a performing score. My working score (with all of the extra staves) would look to Sibelius as the real score but no one but me would ever see it. The performing score would actually be a dynamic part but look just like a score and contain all of the necessary parts.

I frequently combine my percussion parts into percussion scores in the same manner. It works very well. My drummers say they like them better than single parts.

This may be one of those cases where the new technology needs to inspire new ways of thinking and working rather than trying to force the new tools to do stuff the old way. Hope that makes sense. I am anxious to see how Finale has made the linked parts work. I really like them in Sibelius.

An issue that I think is highly relevant, but that only a few can probably comment on, is how the issue of voice handling in multi-part score systems -> parts compares to Sibelius's corresponding solution to the same problem. I believe someone said that Sibelius doesn't do it too well, but can't recall who.

With all the caveats about what Finale's version 1 linked parts can't do, I think it would put things in perspective if someone with Sibelius experience could chime in telling us whether or not Sibelius's version 1 linked parts successfully solved the same problem.

So far, it sounds to me like MakeMusic did an excellent job at implementing a first draft of this highly complex feature, whatever problems there may be for special situations (which still allow you to make your parts that don't work in the new system using the old way, by extracting to separate files).
