Here's what I (think I) learned from MM support this morning: The update MM rest option in Document Options does nothing about creating the MM rests in linked parts in the first place. If I understand this new system correctly, MM rests do not exist in the score automatically; they are not created "behind the scenes" as you look at part views. In retrospect, this seems obvious. So one must select the entire score with the Measure Tool and create the MM rests before viewing individual parts. Duh! Also, David Bailey found the place that contains the recalcitrant part name - Manage Parts/Part Definition/Edit Part Name. This is hidden if you are looking for it in the places it used to be found, but it is accessible, and works as expected. Thanks David. (BTW, MM support did not come up with this location when I asked them. They are probably used to seeing it where it has been moved and have forgotten that we might be looking for it in an old location.) On the optimization issue. Christopher was largely right in suggesting that the optimization must be removed before it can be correctly set, but there's one more element. (MM did suggest this, on the second communication about the problem.) You must remove the optimization before resetting the group attributes to allow normal optimization. I don't consider this to be a bug or anything like it. It's just the computer logic to which we must bend. I do wish there were a tag on the control in Group Attributes that said "Remove optimization before setting this." Real bugs in 2007: Stem Connections and Document Options (Mac only, I believe). It would be nice if MM felt responsible to alert us to existing bugs as they are found. It would have saved me a couple of hours of frustration. They could post a "Known bugs we are addressing" page on the web site - maybe with a cartoon of MM programmers, fly swatters in hand - to lighten the mood. The other strange and frustrating behavior I encountered yesterday had to do with staff styles not transferring from score view to parts views. This behavior is more mysterious than the missing MM rests. And my drum part came out all screwed up in part view - little or no relation to what is seen in the score. If I figure any of this out, I'll report in. I have been thinking about the layout issues in linked parts, and it is not apparent how it would be possible to transfer the layout form one part view to another under these conditions. Perhaps I am missing something - the possibility of a plugin that would transfer this information from part view to part view and not affect the score, but it doesn't seem intuitively easy to me. Am I missing something, or is this simply a working method that works with separate parts but not with linked ones? Thanks to Johannes, Eric, Christopher, Tyler et al who weighed in in my behalf yesterday, and to those who lurked in sympathy.
