Did you try REMOVING optimization? That's what it sounds like the
problem is to me.

bass staff shows, as if I had not added a new staff.
I switch to scroll view and I can see both staves now. The bass and
the newly created one.
Swith back to page view - I see only the bass staff.
Back to scroll view, I delete the bass staff - now I see only the
new staff in scroll view. The bass staff is gone, as expected.
Back to Page view - I see a blank page!

It's the only file in the directory. Try adding a new staff to it.

Check the margins for one of the systems. Maybe one of the margin
settings got set to something so large (or small) that the music is
actually there, just displaying somewhere completely off the page.

I reset the system margins and now I have several systems per
page, which shouldn't be, since there are six staves per system.
Still no music, just the dotted lines and small boxes. Here are
the measurements for all systems, exept the top margin of system
one, in inches:
Top: 0,37153; left: 0,04861; right: 0,04861; bottom: 0,78125
Distance between systems: 0.3
