David,

I recommend you use 5/8-11 threaded rod with steel plate backup as the spring
compressor.

Kevin types faster than me...lol.

The threaded rod and steel backup plates contain the spring through the entire
procedure.  It is much safer this way than using general purpose spring tools
that might slip.  Springs are dangerous, so think every step of the way about
what is taking the spring tension.  No beer during this work, lol.   Do a
search on the FGF site, my screen name 68bigbird.   I posted some photos of the
threaded rod method.  I also posted about the ball joints.  I found a cheap
pickle fork was useless for removing the ball joints.  I have a photo of a gear
puller popping them lose.

Ron,
Thanks for the quick reply! Unfortunately, I am dealing with just the subframe
(off the body and with no engine or trans), so the spring compressor is a must
have item. I can go check out the NAPA tool tomorrow and maybe that will get me
back on track with these springs.
Thanks,
David
