The carrier needs to match the Pontiac axle housing.  The Firebirds came with
the "8.2 BOP" axle.  BOP stands for Buick/Olds/Pontiac.  This axle housing
differes from the corporte "GM" axle.  BOP is different than the GM 8.2 and it
takes a different carrier.  The carriers come in three versions, called series
1, 2 or 3.  The mounting face of the carrier for the ring gear suits the ratios
Sheen listed.  In other words, the carrier will be slightly different depending
on the series.  This accomodates different ring gear thicknesses.   If you find
a used 2.93, 3.08 or 3.23 ring and pinion (I don't think there are any
aftermarket sets lower than 3.55) you would also need a series 2 carrier for
the BOP 8.2 axle.

Unless there are new parts available that weren't available three years ago
when I looked, your choice would be to find used parts or to buy a 3.55 gear
set (or higher) and a series 3 posi.  Back then, there were no aftermarket posi
carriers for series 2 ring/pinions.

If you go shopping for a posi and/or gears, be watchful for the difference
between BOP 8.2 and GM 8.2.  I don't think the parts interchange.

So it's not the "outside" part of the axle that needs to be "correct" but the
carrier on the inside?  And any of them will fit inside the "outside" I already
have for the 2.78 ?
