First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List ......................................................................... Yes, the differential case is the part that differs depending on the ring & pinion set. I should have said case, not carrier. In the manual section 4A says:
"Nine different axle ratios are available for the various car models. They can be identified by the code stamped on the rear of the LH axle tube adjacent to the carrier (Fig. 41-1, or on the left rear brake drum surface. Three differential cases, which differ in ring gear mounting dimensions are used: one for 2.56 and 2.78 ratios, one for 2.93, 3.08 and 3.23 rations and one for 3.36, 3.55, 3.90 and 4.33 ratios. When changing axle ratios, be sure to use the proper differential case" I don't believe there is any problem for fit of various ratios in the stock "carrier and tubes" assembly. I think all ratios would fit the existing axle assembly when matched with the correct differential case. When I searched several years ago, I didn't find anything lower than 3.55 in aftermarket. I also didn't find any posi for the 3.08 that I have. That's why I bought a 12-bolt. I see from an auction on ebay that Yukon Gear sells a 3.36 for the BOP 8.2 rear. If this part is listed correctly, that would be my choice. I don't see it listed on Yukon Gear's website. Jegs and Summit don't list Richmond in any ratio lower than 3.55. I think 3.55 is a little steep for a driver. Here's an RPM calculator. http://www.angelfire.com/fl/procrastination/rear.html Larry --- On Sun, 6/21/09, S Sterchi <[email protected]> wrote: From: S Sterchi <[email protected]> Subject: RE: [FGF] Rear End To: [email protected] Date: Sunday, June 21, 2009, 6:35 PM First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List ......................................................................... Isn't the "carrier" the "outside" part? See part #5 on 2nd page: http://www.bafb.org/1968firebird.org/illustrated/rear/diff1.html I think the posi part is called the "case" or "differential case". So, there are 3 carriers that only accept their respective matching cases, which limits what gears you can change to, right?
