The carrier is #1 on page one. I know, it says housing, but in today's
terminology, it's the carrier.
As the gear ratio get higher (numerically) the pinion gear (#32 page 2) has
fewer teeth therefore is smaller in diameter. The ring gear (#33 page 2)
has to move over to meet with the smaller pinion gear. This requires a
different carrier (#1, page 1). Despite the wording on those pages, the
common name these days for #1 is the carrier, the common name for #5 page 2
is the axle housing. I hope this helps?.?.?.

I think the posi part is called the "case" or "differential case".
So, there are 3 carriers that only accept their respective matching cases,
which limits what gears you can change to, right?

I see Jegs listing an auburn posi carrier part 5420114 supporting 2.93:1
through 3.22:1. The carrier 5420113 supports 3.36:1 up. I don't find
any aftermarket ring & pinion lower than 3.55. The Auburn page is at

Richmond gear offers a 3.55, part 836-49-0082-1
Motive gear offers a 3.55, part MGR-BP882355
Lower than 3.55, I think you would have to buy a used gear set.
