In almost all cases, unless you run 10.5" slicks you will break the tires
loose long before you thrash the rear end.  

For now, replace the gears.  If you do happen to trash the rear later, worry
about a 12 bolt replacement then.

This is just of course, my opinion.

Hey guys, what is the easiest way to get a 3.08 or preferably a 3.23 gear
into my peg leg 2.56 8.2 rear? Is the 8.2 really that wimpy? Someday I will
stroke out my 400 to a 455. In the back of my mind I would think the thing
would be strong enough unless I strapped on some slicks which would maybe
once or twice in my lifetime. What do you think?
