I had been running a 2.56 peg leg behind my 455 since 2001 in my 69 vert till i
swapped it with a 3.23 posi earlier this year. The 8.2 is plenty strong as is
unless you're going to be doing 5000 rpm clutch dumps to your slicks at the
track.
If you do a lot of highway cruising, I would leave well enough alone. It will
keep your RPM's lower at highway speeds keeping the temps down and the wear and
tear down also.
That said, I would recomend going to a well built 2004R with OD and lockup
torque converter AND 3.23's. That's what my combo is now and it keeps the RPM's
down below 2000 at 70 (it was down at about 1400 with the 2.56 before!) and it
still gives you nice burnouts and launches.

Hey guys, what is the easiest way to get a 3.08 or preferably a 3.23 gear
into my peg leg 2.56 8.2 rear? Is the 8.2 really that wimpy? Someday I will
stroke out my 400 to a 455. In the back of my mind I would think the thing
would be strong enough unless I strapped on some slicks which would maybe
once or twice in my lifetime. What do you think?
