Re: Hop-Out curve; Over the years I've answered this a few times - It's too bad
email posts can't be converted to sticky-notes. Anyway, basically a H-O
distributor curve is a non-linear advance curve. Most if not all standard
curves are linear which works for most load points and conditions. The H-O
curve starts out with a slower ramp and then approximately at mid-point,
[mid-point rpm between idle to all in @ ~2800], it ramps quickly. This curve
was originally intended for heavier drag cars with high-compression engines. To
employ this curve 2 different [tension] springs are installed to control the
mechanical advance. Finding the correct spring tensions can be a challenge. I
bought a Mallory strip kit which has a variety of springs and instructions that
go into more detail. Or if you can find a shop that still does distributor
curving that would be easiest. Just provide the car weight, rear diff ratio etc
and they take it from there. I went the
poor-mans route and used trial & error to find 2 springs that I was happy
with. I would never say this is the silver-bullet for max performance - it just
an old racers trick that I chose to toy with...

Dion; You shouldn't have to use a special gasket or take material out of the
dead. As mentioned earlier, now-a-days just select a cam & dished pistons to
reduce the dynamic compression. My situation was different, I have flat-top
forged pistons and an older high-lift cam and I chose not to change those bits;
instead opted to change the heads. I went so far as to cc my heads and check
the piston to deck clearance to calculate the CR. Hind sight being 20/20, I
would've changed the cam. My current heads have a lot of mods so I doubt I'll
go back to my 62's anytime soon.

re: thermo-quad; that's not a particularly popular carb, but it shouldn't bog
or have a delay with the secondaries. Perhaps there's a vacuum leak or
mechanical bind. It seems you may be masking another problem by maxing out the
acceleration pump. When was the carb last re-built?
Good Luck...
