First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List .........................................................................
Head questions for PeteJD. Pete I have a set of #46 heads that came off of a 1974 GTO 350 motor. The heads are the large valve, screw stud type with 89ccs. My thoughts about putting them on a stock 455 motor will give me about 9.5 to 1 compression ratio based upon the compression chart I have. Reading your article about removing the #16 heads to get a better "hop-out" makes a lot of sense. According to my charts you would have been in the 11's to 1 compression ratio with the #16 heads. Do you have any comments either pro or con on my using the #46 heads. My funds are limited and therefore looking to upgrade my firebird to a 455. First Generation Firebird-L Mailing List ........................................................................ ion, agree with Paul, it's not easy to compete with today's auto technology. It all omes down to the power to weight ratio. A 375hp engine in a 4000lb car may not erform as well as a 2700lb. car with 300hp. And, of course with more power omes the issue of getting it to the ground - getting the car to hook-up. I lways thought it was funny to see muscle cars with little 7" tires on them. =) 'm selective with who I race and try to keep up with what models have what ngine etc.. n regard to your 455; I don't recall what carb you have but make sure your econdaries are opening at the right time. And, again, if you're shooting for 1:1, [even w/ 92 octane] your timing options will be limited. I had to run an ctane booster [which is pricey] before i pulled my 62 heads. I'm now running 9.5:1 and have a lot of latitude in terms of timing adjustability. With that, 've set up a 'hop-out" timing curve which seems to work well with heavy muscle ars.
