Thanx for reply Pete,

The carb is a mid 70's 850 cfm Carter Thermo Quad (aka thermo bog) commonly
found on chrysler cars of the day. Not sure who put it on there, but I haven't
heard of them being on these Pontiacs.

I have played with the secondaries a bit and seems like I have optimized them
all I can. There is the typical pause when I put my foot in it (lean) then it
goes good. I have optimized the accelerator pump to max squirt and travel when
I hit it. But it is a single pumper so the little pause I believe is normal.

I am not shooting for 11:1, I'd prefer to make big power at 8:1, but all the
big power from these 455's in 1970 were at 10.5:1 at around 87cc. I was just
saying that 11:1 should be OK with our 92 octane gas and maybe a little octane
boost (about $6 per tank).

So if I could remove some material and port a set of 72cc 62's or 16's and use
a little thicker head gasket, would it be streetable at 11:1 on a 455?
