I agree with Paul, it's not easy to compete with today's auto technology. It 
all comes down to the power to weight ratio. A 375hp engine in a 4000lb car may 
not perform as well as a 2700lb. car with 300hp. And, of course with more power 
comes the issue of getting it to the ground - getting the car to hook-up. I 
always thought it was funny to see muscle cars with little 7" tires on them. =) 
I'm selective with who I race and try to keep up with what models have what 
engine etc.. 
In regard to your 455; I don't recall what carb you have but make sure your 
secondaries are opening at the right time. And, again, if you're shooting for 
11:1, [even w/ 92 octane] your timing options will be limited. I had to run an 
octane booster [which is pricey] before i pulled my 62 heads. I'm now running 
~9.5:1 and have a lot of latitude in terms of timing adjustability. With that, 
I've set up a 'hop-out" timing curve which seems to work well with heavy muscle 
cars.
