Sure would be nice if we had a test suite of programs to completely check out a problem computer, and permissible ratings for the various functions tested. Something like "performance test" ( http://www.passmark.com/ ), but with the additional tools to check the other parts of the computer as required.

Michael,

FlexRadio fully supports Vista-64 signed drivers on our products. It is
*not* necessary to turn off UAC. We have a huge number of customers running
Vista-64 without problems.

However, your PC is a system. Interrupt conflicts between the FireWire
controller and other cards can cause problems. Other software processes on
the computer can cause DPC overloads. Not all PC systems are the same and
different vendors load different junk that can cause problems.

Please contact [email protected] for assistance in resolving your
problems. I am sure Dudley will be able to assist you in getting things
going.

Subject: [Flexradio] Some initial comments

I thought a would share a few comments, strengths and weaknesses. I have
spent the last week here in Portillo Chile with my 3K. With limited
internet, I have had time to really focus on trying to get this to work and
work well.

When I could get the device working, I thought it was great and I was just
starting to scratch the surface of the power of this box. The hardware is
amazing.

However, the software has a long way to go before it truly gets to the full
Ham consumer market. Yes, it does run just fine on XP as many have told me.
But, if Flex wants to make it to the next step, they either have to claim
that running on Vista 64 bit is not fully supported. To ask a customer to
disable UAC, run in TEST mode and to run with digitally signed drivers off
is great for those of you who want to be beta testers.

I have worked with PC's from the initial 8088 when I was with IBM as it was
released. I also had to support it for years up to including OS/2. I am
far from a virgin PC user and if I can't get this to run stable on a
supposedly support platform, then 80% of the Flex market will not be able to
as well.

With want I know and do with the internet, I refuse to keep in this mode for
any time. The exposures to machine infiltration if you are connected to the
internet is very large.

I suspect that I will return my 3K and wait until it is fully support and
tested with the current market trends (ie: what you and I can pick up at
Best Buy).

Clearly the weakest link is firewire. Firewire and Windows have always had
a struggle. If this run on a Mac, I might go buy a Macbook in a second if I
know it would work flawlessly. It will be interesting to see how this goes
for the coming months.
