Ah...just remembered...this is not the correct (or in any case only) fix for
the problem.  The thing that makes the most difference is separating the butt
edges of the control surfaces from the top and bottom.  On the p51d the flaps
and ailerons are single objects except the sides and front square edge
surfaces are combined into a second object (these are the surfaces normally
hidden if the flap or aileron is in up or neutral posistion).  In some cases
you'll want 
the top and bottom surfaces to be the same object; the p51d looked better that
way.
