My guess is that at some point Kalman filters with revolutionize FlightGear's simulated control systems very much like they have revolutionized control systems in the 'modern' world :-)
Kalman filters are generally for filtering noisy / imprecise sensor input, estimating senser errors, etc, correct?
As I understand it, Kalman filters help improve sensor input and give us a better picture of the degree of their uncertainty, but have nothing to do with the the actual control algorithms.
In the sense that they provide better input to the control algorithm, they are revolutionary, but they aren't a better control algorithm in and of themselves.
And they are very non-trivial to impliment. :-)
Beyond that, I know nothing about them.
