I can really remember, that one of you said, that the
aim is to become a civilian simulator - so I'm
mistaken?
Clearly the primary purpose and aim of FlightGear is to be a "civilian" sim,
but there is a tremendous amount of gray area here as to what constitutes
"non-civilian" use. And there is a huge range of interpretations of what
constitutes non-civilian use. Some individuals object if there is any hint
of anything that could possibly have a military purpose. However, many
things that are done in military aviation are extremely useful to simulate
in the civilian world as well. It's just impossible to draw a hard line and
leave anything left.
Just for instance, there are many "civilian" handling qualities tests that
involve things like chasing other aircraft, aiming a gun sight, dropping
"dummy" bombs and seeing where they hit. The accuracy (or lack there of) of
some of these sorts of test can tell you a lot about the handling qualities
of your civilian aircraft.
I know we can go back and forth forever and ever with example and counter
example, but what comes to mind first here is that we can no longer take box
cutters on airplanes because they were used as terrorist weapons, but I was
issued several of these when I was a civilian stock boy at a big dept store
one summer.
I think we need some flexibility and understanding here or we will end up
banning a lot of useful stuff.
Curt.
