Adrian, you might have a look what the crop shader does with a small 
texture and a colour map (or has done, I am not sure that origin is 
still in source) and what I took from there to the basic concept of the 
transition shaders some time ago. At least for me it is a very 
intersting way dealing with small textures sizes and avoiding "visible" 
repeating.
