As for carrier ops:

What would also be really slick would be to set up the sim to operate the
ship (as would another aircraft being operated for formation flight etc.)

I attended a Navy League meeting not long ago where some folks from the
California Maritime Academy gave a presentation where the ship sim that they
use was discussed. Apparently it models the ship handling well for various
size ships.

Gives them a chance to see how the ships actually will respond to helm and
engine commands.

Could be that a carrier could be modeled in flightgear.

I'm going to see if I can contact someone in the sim department there to
see what (if anything) I can find out about their operation.

(Perhaps flightgear can do an entire task force <grin>!)

Of course I'd like to see the OLD U.S.S. Hornet (CVA 12) modeled, as that
was the ship I operated from on her last cruise as a CVA!
