That window split and join issue was fixed in 2.41 and is now a *lot* easier 
to use. It now prompts you for which window you want to split or join when 
you right click on a border and all you have to do is move the mouse towards 
the window you want to split or join and left click.

I really don't think a *modern* version of Blender is that hard to learn. It's 
maybe 30% harder than 3D Studio Max which is what I played with before 
switching to Blender.
