I think it is the dot product of the speed vector and a normalized 
vector pointing from the AI-Object to the destination. Since only the 
sign is interesting, you can use a not normalized vector, too. Or 
directly the difference to the last calculated distance. But with the 
dot-product you do not need to calculate the distance. If you do not 
need the distance for other reasons, this could be an advantage.
