You've missed nothing Andy. Thats precisely what it is. It weighs in
around 236 kB for the model, and 2.6 MB for the rgb texture (d'oh!).

As far as I know the SRTM data I've grabbed (SRTM30) is the very same
that terragear builds the default terrain from. Somehow the mesh I
created looks massively more detailed than the underlying default
terrain.

Will do. You do realise that you'll need to conquer Blender to follow
the methods I use? :-)
