I feel your pain, but a Distiller setting isn't going to help. Remember that once you have the PDF template background created, it's already a PDF. Distiller converts PostScript/EPS files to PDF; it has no ability to convert PDFs to other versions of PDF.

Have you tried changing the "Compliance level" on the Output tab of the Composition Settings? I don't have ready access to an iGen RIP to try it out here, but if you change it to Acrobat 3.0 compatibility, that *might* do what you want.
