I don't think you get the jest of our question/suggestion.. The selection needs to be WHEN the PDF is exported from InDesign... that's when the flattening has to occur.. I change it back and forth many times a day to do this... heck, even a dialog box that polls and displays what PDF export setting is active would be a help...

True, that if you are STARTING with a PDF, you have no control and have to scramble...
