Karen,

It will no doubt all come out at the inquest.

If he was still moving, it is likely he would be shot again. The belief is that if he gets into his pocket or under his coat, he might set off an explosion. So, you make sure that he stops all movement.

I rather think that the shots to the head occurred because the undercover men could not shoot at the body for obvious reasons.

So, they should have remained cool, calm, and collected – even though the adrenalin was pumping, fear of an explosion was in their minds, and the man was already apparently under suspicion.

We are well able to criticize their actions because we are never in that position. We don’t have to make split second decisions that may save or destroy lives.

We can simply complain about it in our E-Mails.

Harry

By Rodney Coates, from another list:

  It only took 5 times

rodneyc//05

but he looked like one of them,

why did he run,

not listen to our commands

just ran,

and we did what we had to do

to protect the nation,

to secure the blessings

of peace and tranquility

for God, Country,

and the Queen,

we blew his head off

damn..

it only took 5 bullets.

Five, not 3 or 4,

but five - right into the temple,

left nothing to mourn about

you would think one

quick one to the brain

would have done it.

but

it took five

bam, bam, bam,bam, bam

and

he was dead

dead

with the first one

but you know

those terrorists

the cells keep on living

so for

God, Country,

and the Queen

we blew his head off

but damn

why you so upset

it only took 5 times.

I think it’s the five shots to the head that sets this apart from the average mistaken identity killing, allowing for adrenalin and literal rush to avoid a detonation. Was he not dead after the first two?

London with its minority populations does not need to acquire the reputation for excessive force that the IDF or LA PD have.  Britain does not need an intifada or home grown race violence, as Keith worries about.

The Japanese would have the same public perception problem if this happened in a Tokyo subway to a Korean migrant worker.

Harry's question still stands.

I know that it would be nice to avoid grievances and for us all to live in peace and harmony.  But at this juncture: What to do?

If the police don't shoot they are blamed.  If the police shoot they are blamed.

Chris,

What would you do if someone in a heavy overcoat on a hot
day - someone who was under your surveillance - went into
the subway and boarded a train, soon after similar
situations in which bombs had been exploded killing 50
people?

You needn't answer, for you are never faced with that
situation.

It's always easy - for a non-player - to complain at
mistakes made by those who are trying to save multiple
casualties and must think and act quickly.

Harry
