Gruetzi Christoph,

I'll see your Thatcher and raise you one. Here in Ontario, education being
a provincial matter, we had a former 'socialist' premier do a review of
post-secondary education. His recommendations were a deregulation of
tuitions and a replacement of grants with loans for students. We now have
students graduating with $40k+ debts into a severely depressed job market.
Collection agencies are having a field day. Meanwhile, our 'Liberal'
premier cut the special food allowance for those with special needs on
welfare and replaced it with a piddling increase across the board. He,
today, in honour of our Thanksgiving, appealed to the citizens of the
province to be generous in their donations to the local food bank. It
appears that the supply cannot keep up with the demand.

Cheers,

Ed Davey

Oh well, Keith's Anglo-centrism again... Guess what, the world does not
only consist of England (and Bismarck's Germany). In modern countries,
education IS public, and it was only Thatcherism that rolled it back to
privatization. So REH is absolutely right on this one.
