I got in the habit many years ago of saving the installers of all new
versions of my favorite software programs into a special folder for
backup. I call it my 'Move Out' collection. It consistently comes in
handy. After I burn these collections to discs over time I catalogue
them. My catalogue app of choice has been DiskTracker, but there are
probably better alternatives. Whenever I need something from the past
I can dig it up via my catalogue.

Example: I've been playing with Intego VirusBarrier for the past
year. One problem it has is fragility where it can crash after waking
my MacBook from sleep. The solution is to reinstall it. The installer
is handy in my collection. Another example is the latest version of
CopyPaste Pro, which is extremely unstable. So I used my collection
to get the previous version and install it.

Thoughtful developers provide their own collection of back versions
of their software. Unfortunately, there are many developers who only
provide the current version. This is a big mistake. Sometimes writing
to them can prod them into getting you the older version you require.

Part of the problem with new versions of apps is that developers go
by word of Apple that the new code compiler is fully backward with a
certain OS version. Except there is fine print that is missed, or
even Apple left something out. Having an application come out the
other end that is '10.4.11' compatible but NOT G3 compatible fits the
bill. There may well be a way to recompile the application to include
G3 compatibility. Only your developer will know for sure. If there is
no solution, the all you can do is stick with the previous version.
