Partitioning is not the best answer. Making a backup that is not stored on
the same physical device is. Burn DVD's or use an external HD. Most times
all partitions will be lost at one time when a device fails.
Very true, but if there was a backup of the data, there would be no need to try and retrieve the lost files with recovery software such as TechTool or Norton. When there is no backup available, as was the case in the original post, having a partition allows you to save the recovered files to another, separate segment of the HD without fear of overwriting other files you might still want to recover from the first partition.
